Shawl Complete, Now Knitting Toe-up Socks

The gray lace shawl is complete. 2010-01-27-gray-shawl Turned out very nicely. Still have the black yarn to match, but think I’ll try to find a different pattern to do with that.

I knitted a few dishrags in between. Had to adjust knitting style to accommodate the non-stretchy cotton yarn. That was good practice. I can purl 2 or 3 different ways now, depending on yarn stretch, pattern, etc.

Yesterday, I finished my first toe-up sock — a sock knitted starting from the toe instead of from the top of the sock. It uses a different cast-on and heel structure. It was fun figuring that out. But the sock is too big. Or rather, it fits just right, but the yarn is a good stretchy elastic yarn, so it’s actually too loose. That’s OK. I cast on another sock in the same yarn today and am making it smaller — smaller needles. I think the fabric will be nicer and the fit will probably be about right. Just gotta figure out sizing on these.

For the socks, I’m using the bamboo circulars I ordered from China a month or two ago. I like them. They were plenty cheap and seem easy enough to knit with. The yarn is a Paton Sock Yarn I picked up from Michael’s. I prefer nowadays to experiment on cheaper yarn. I’ll go get some nice sock yarn later when I’ve figured out the sizing properly.

On the horizon is knitting some burial outfits for boys. The church is doing that as a project. Over the summer, I crocheted several outfits and buntings. Wendy has been finishing those up with hand-sewing linings and adding buttons and ribbons. I made several girl outfits, but there’s a great shortage of boys burial outfits. As a man who knits, I suppose I should focus there, eh? I’ll pick that up again soon.
