New Year’s Games Recommendations

We love games in my family. Today, we’ll be playing some of our favorites. Here are some of them.

Bananagrams

Banagrams uses tiles like scrabble. It’s just a bag of letter tiles — no board, score is easy to keep in our head. Each player builds his own crossword puzzle out of tiles he draws. Players have to draw tiles periodically through the game, adding them to their puzzle. After all the tiles are drawn, the first player to use all his tiles wins!

Variations: We play a variation, too, called “Steal-A-Word.” Begin will all tiles face down. First play turns one over, then the next player, then the next player, and so on. First one to spot a 3-letter word (or more letters), takes that word. Longer words trump shorter words. Then if you can add tiles (except a plural “s”) to someone else’s word, you can steal that word. For example, if I have “tie” and someone turns over a “d”, then you can call “tide” and steal my “tie.” After all tiles are turned over, the player with the most words wins.

Quiddler

Quiddler is a card game where players build words of 3 letters or more. The first hand deals 3 cards. The first player who can build a 3-letter word with his cards lays them down, then each player has one more turn to try to use his/her cards. The second had deals 4 cards, and so on until 10 cards. The game moves quickly enough to stay interesting. In our family, we tend to help each other once the cards are laid down — rearranging to use more cards so that fewer count against, and so on. But that’s just our family. Maybe you’re more cut-throat? :-)

Uno Attack

We like Uno. Uno-Attack adds button-pushing to the game, which is good for us modern types, eh. After you deal the first hand, the number of cards drawn is totally random, from zero to, oh, 6-8 cards in one “draw” or push of the button. Cool!

Uno Spin

Another fun variation on Uno, adding more random consequences and keeping everyone’s attention so that they can be the first to yell out “Uno spin” if the spinner hits that item.

Then when the kids lose one of the games, or I leave it at my sister’s house — again — I can repace it. :-) Or you can go down to your local game store to buy them. Doesn’t matter. I recommend them regardless!
