Jeers: SaltLakeScouts.org’s IE-only web app

Boo. Hiss. The local Boy Scouts of America Council’s web site for updating ranking advancements, rosters, etc., only runs with Internet Explorer on Windows.

I run linux.

So every time my wife, the cub den leader, has to update cub scout info, she has to launch the Windows virtual machine and fight with Windows and IE and a really persnickety web app to get the job done.

IE-only. Really?! I mean, my bank can run a full bill pay and account access system that’s fully cross-platform. My payroll app is fully cross platform. I can even get my W2 download via a cross-platform site. I can file my USA taxes on a fully cross-platform system.

But the poor BSA can’t figure out cross-platform. You’d think with all the money they pull in — and it’s not a little — they could afford a decent web app (problem #1) that runs on all platforms (problem #2).

*sigh*

  • Works in Chrome.. .if that is any help… They SAY it only works in IE, but if you click continue anyway, it might work for you too.

  • Thanks, SKye. We’ve tested and can’t run it on linux. Must be a plugin / add-on dependency more than browser. Even tried having Firefox identify itself as IE. No go. May install Chrome on linux to try, but am thinking it’s a deeper dependency than that.

I feel your pain. I use OS X, so I have to use a windows virtual machine. But this is the best part: IE8 broke all the .aspx report generation! (For me, anyway… maybe other people have better luck?) So I ended up creating a new XP virtual machine where I didn’t upgrade IE, just so I could do the advancements. Ugh.

(Thanks for giving me this little rant– I stumbled on your post while googling the advancement website using IE6.)

  • Glad to Scout

    So ah, Question?

Dude, seems like YOUR the one with the ability to help out. Charitable organization and all.

I gotta totally agree with your point however. CNE-geek wise, and my rechartering was not going well! Seen more than a couple of computers, MS &%+#@$, networks, apps & … So I was really pulling both hairs out due to lack of progress.

No help from support or whatever – DANG, I sure felt bit when I realized the IE requirement thing.

Give ‘em a hand – Thanks for all I’m sure that you do!

btw – don’t ya just love all of those cutting edge folks using those apple things. Man they’ve certainly discovered the latest and greatest and hence now own the wisdom of the world. Problem is, their cutting edge stuff (68000) has been around since the 70s? GREAT LAUGHS for a sick man.
