Kitting Gifts Done and Delivered

Well, I’m done with the various projects of the last couple of months and they’ve been delivered. I’m content. I now have only one project on the needles, a simple lace shawl for the girls. A second ball of yarn in a different color is waiting for a second shawl.

Each of the kids got a pair of fingerless mittens — some simple rib stitch with a hole for the thumb, and the 2 youngest the tree pattern with the thumb. They also got one other knitted something. Donella got the simple wool collar-scarf that can be worn with nearly any outfit to help keep the back of her neck warm. Justina got the orange beaded lace scarf. Carter got an ear flap hat with tassles (that was a risk, but he loves it!). Ben and Elijah both got socks (because Ben asked for them).

Wendy got a pair of the alpaca yarn tree fingerless mittens like mine. I gave my step-mother-in-law the collar-scarf like Donella. I gave the same to my mom, but done out of baby alpaca because she can’t bear any wool. Even the alpaca itches a tiny bit for her, but is comfortable enough to wear. I gave my mother-in-law the olive beaded scarf like Justina’s. Dad asked for a pair of fingerles mittens, but in acrylic since he, too, isn’t a wool fan, so I got a nice wide striping acrylic yarn and made him those mittems. I used the tree pattern structure, but put my own cable pattern on it instead.

I think those are all the knitted gifts. I enjoyed that. Looking forward to other projects for next Christmas.

BTW, the socks turned out well. It was fun to do them without a written pattern, just combining different techniques I’d learned and using general formulas from Verla via my sister, Julie. I like knitting that way. Patterns are fine and well, but there’s something neat about knitting more generally, like playing an intrument by ear in addition to reading music.
