Sorry – I’m listening to the new Star Trek movie in French in the background, so my mind is processing in French and English at the same time. I compromised in the title, but will try to keep the rest in English for you.
I posed the question to my kids at dinner tonight: What’s a blog?
Surprisingly to me, they didn’t know. (OK, the eldest may have known, but she wasn’t there.)
So I defined “blog” as “web log,” and asked what a log was, and once they got past the obvious potty humor, we discussed scientific logs. They immediately tied that to the video log done by the main character in “Avatar,” which they saw yesterday. And thus I was abvle to define for them video logs, or vlogs. They laughed: “Vlog? Really?” Oh, yes, I assured them.
Then I described how blogs are used now and told them some about my professional blog, CottagePM.com. I suggested to them that perhaps they also would find that they had some unique perspectices on some subject matter even as teenagers. I told them how some kids keep vlogs. And with that, they found some new subject to discuss as they cleared their plates and left the kitchen. But perhaps I planted a seed. Somewhere in the next few years, I hope one of my kids will find such a niche and begin blogging.
Me, I’m enjoying exploring some of the technical aspects of blogging. I just moved this blog to my own hosted WordPress and launched my other blog on the same platform. I’m following the model I observe and have discussed with others, like Josh at PMSTudent.com and some mates at work. I’m blogging and putting things out on twitter. I’m participating in Twitter conversations in the PM space. I’m beginnging to comment on other PM blogs and, by the way, enjoying the learning that comes through that process. I’m enjoying discovering others’ perspectives. Time becomes the challenge. I’ve begun subscribing to interesting and recommended blogs, but how to find the time to read them, let alone comment regularly and meaningfully?! But it’s interesting, and I’m looking forwarding to finding the time. I’ve also begun exploring SEO and some of the tech there. That’s a slower path. May have to pick Rene‘s brain for that.
I’ve focused my blogging exposure in the PM space at CottagePM.com, but perhaps it would be interesting to begin the same on key categories on this blog: knitting, LDS music, sourdough, etc. That would be fun, too, and perhaps the resulting network of contacts would be equally as interesting.
